Keeping up with SWAT activities
SWAT and FCCLA had a joint meeting December 13, 2016 to end the semester of activities. Students were treated to pizza for their Christmas meeting. Alex Gaines, president of both student organizations conducted the meeting. FCCLA donated $260 toward some Christmas gifts. Students were reminded about healthy eating tips to promote wellness throughout the holidays. To conclude the meeting, students were told to look under their chairs for a note. The student that had a note won a door prize. Both organizations next meeting will be in January.
On November 17, 2016 three members of the Canton Youth Action Council stayed for the after school All Stars program to talk tobacco with the students from grades 1-6. Sherrie Haub and member Hannah Hood gave a presentation that made students aware of the tobacco effects. Visual props included , posters, and large cigarette display that list the chemicals in tobacco, and short you tube videos. Grades 3-6 participated in a math game – “The Cost of Cigarettes”. Research shows that it is very likely that if we can keep kids from smoking or using tobacco products until they are 18, more than likely they won’t start to use the products.
