Church at the Y sets up local firefighter scholarships

In the Spring of 2018 James Newell and his wife Lisa watched with family and friends as a devastating wildfire that consumed hundreds of thousands of acres in Dewey County raced towards the Church at the Y.

Newell, who owns the building, called a nearby firefighting crew but as the winds continued to shift it looked like help might not arrive. When flames were just feet from the building though, the crew made it and saved the structure.

The Newells had been working to restore the building since they purchased it in 2015, installing plumbing, a full kitchen, heat and air and more so that it could once again serve as a community gathering place.

Out of gratitude, Newell decided to do something to give back to the local fire departments. On September 21 he held a fundraising event at the facility with live music and sirloin steak dinners.
