Wilma Noretta (Garman) Martin

Wilma was born May 4, 1937 and departed this world on May 26, 2020. She was born to Calvert John (Dick) Garman and LaRene Crystal (Tootsie) (Grabow) Garman in Blaine County Oklahoma. She graduated from Longdale High School in May 1955 and married Ernest William (Ernie Bill) Martin in June 1955. After they were married, they moved to California for a few months until Ernie Bill entered the Army. They were stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia where Calvert and Nelson were born. After leaving the military, they returned to the Canton area where Linda and Jennie were born, settling on land they bought while in the service. Wilma attended Southwestern State College, graduating with her teaching degree in 1970. She began her teaching career at Canton Public School where she taught until 1994. Wilma returned to Southwestern Oklahoma State University while teaching to get her Mas-ter of Education in 1975.

While Wilma would not allow the kids to have a motorcycle when they were growing up, she and Ernie began touring the United States and Canada on their motorcycle in the early 80s. They rode in 48 states and many Canadian provinces.

Wilma began quilting soon after Ernie died and has pieced hundreds of quilts. She also loved to hand quilt and has quilted many quilts for others. She was a charter member of the Tangled Thread Quilt Guild, formerly known as the Silly Sewers. The group traveled to Arkansas twice a year to make quilt tops. Wilma loved to make jelly and give it to her kids and grandkids as well as many others.

She was a faithful member of the Canton United Methodist Church and the Longdale Gym Associa-tion. She was a member of the Eastern Star and served as Rainbow Mom for the Canton Rainbow Girls for many years.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernie Bill, two brothers, Gerald Garman and Calvert Junior Garman, one sister, Louise Baker, and an infant granddaughter.

She is survived by two sons, Calvert, wife Cheryl and Nelson, wife Tracy and two daughters, Linda, husband Steve, and Jennie, husband Dennis. She has nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Wilma is survived by one sister, Mary Lou Dow, and two brothers, Albert Garman and Gary Garman, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Canton United Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Hammans officiating. Interment will follow in Homestead Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, OK. Memorials may be made to the Longdale Gym Association or the Canton United Methodist Women with the funeral home acting as custodian at P.O. Box 36, Canton, OK 73724.
