Virgil Whiteshirt Jr.
Wake services for Virgil Whiteshirt, Jr., 66, of El Reno, Oklahoma, was held Friday, September 11 at the Canton Community Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12 at the same venue with Pastor James Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Canton Indian Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, Oklahoma.
Virgil was born October 4, 1953 at Clinton, Oklahoma to Virgil and Winnie (Chiefly) Whiteshirt. He departed this life on September 5, 2020 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Virgil grew up in the Canton community, and attended school at Canton and graduated with the class of 1972 at Riverside Indian School. He also studied at Haskell Indian Nations University. Virgil worked as a wildland firefighter, a pipeliner, in the Maintenance Dept. and as a bus driver for the Canton Head Start Program, eventually becoming the director of the program. He had also served as the A-1 legislator for 4 years. Virgil most recently had served 8 years as the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes Gaming Commissioner.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Delwin Whiteshirt; Virgil’s wife Harriet survived him for three days before joining him in heaven; he is also survived by three children, daughter Kristeena Sleeper and husband Jerel, daughter Alissa Carlon and son Miguel Whiteshirt and wife Raven Oliver; two sisters, Bernice Whiteshirt and Donna May Whiteshirt; nine grandchildren, Aldan, Taya, Lauren Deleena and Mya Whiteshirt, Omar Trejo, Carmen Sleeper, and Jessica and Victoria Ochoa; many extended family and friends.
