Imogene Betty Hewitt
Imogene “Jean” Hewitt passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2019 in Weatherford. Jean was born January 26, 1925 to Ward and Grace Barney and was one of six sisters. She graduated school in Oakwood and soon afterward married Wayne “Bus” Hewitt. They lived in Oklahoma City for a couple of years before moving to Canton and starting the family farming business. Here they raised two children, Larry and Jana. Jean went on to have a successful, 30-plus year career as Editor of the Canton Times newspaper. She was hardly ever seen in town without her camera and notepad in hand to capture the latest news. Jean also loved her community and all the friends she made over the years. She truly enjoyed what she did and didn’t retire until well into her 80’s. Jean was honored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 1986, 2001 and 2010. In addition, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Canton for many years. But above all else, she enjoyed being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband Wayne “Bus” Hewitt; son Larry Hewitt; parents Ward and Grace Barney; and sisters Bernice DeLong, Janeva Norris, Leota Crosby and Ada May Barney. She is survived by her daughter Jana Smith of Weatherford; sibling Billie Haub; sister in-laws Mary Brown and Gwen Hewitt; grandchildren Tim Hewitt from Fort Worth, Kaylie White and Keagan Smith from Weatherford; and great-grandchildren Chloe, Christian, Emilee, Campbell, Olivia, Ava and Kynlee; and several nieces and nephews. The writer of this piece, grandson Tim Hewitt, wants to say on behalf of Jana and all of Jean’s grandchildren and great grandchildren, that we are deeply sad and will greatly miss our beloved mother and grandma, but take joy in knowing, with full assurance, that we will see her again someday in Heaven.
The family would like to thank the entire Brookdale Assisted Living staff for showing “Grandma” love and providing incredible care for her over the last few years. You are all greatly appreciated!
